Release IT, according to Mark Hambrook, a salmon biologist, and head of the MSA, 75 to 90% of grilse are males. For some reason or another most of the hen grilse come earlier in the season than the males.
What's really great to see is that the heavy grilse run validates that the record amount of smolt counted last May - some 2,000,000+ - apparently did okay in the sea last winter. This could mean an equally large run of 2 MSW in 2012 as the rest of that year class returns.
